Instagram is experimenting with a new feature that introduces a downranking option for comments, allowing users to express disapproval of negative or disagreeable remarks. This new capability is part of a test aimed at enhancing user experience on the platform.
According to Instagram’s leadership, the downrank option provides a private means for users to indicate their dissatisfaction with certain comments, without making this decision publicly visible. Unlike downvotes seen on platforms like YouTube, this feature will not display a tally of downvotes, maintaining user privacy.
As Instagram head stated, “This is a test; there is no dislike count, nor will anyone know if you tap the button. Ultimately, we may incorporate this feedback into comment ranking to reposition less favorable comments.” The overarching aim is to foster a more positive atmosphere in the comments section.
This isn’t the first occasion Meta has explored downvote capabilities, and while this feature is currently being piloted, it doesn’t guarantee a widespread rollout in the future. Meta’s ongoing trials reflect an effort to enhance user safety and engagement on the platform.
