The Public Health Ministry has issued a warning regarding the swift rise in influenza cases, especially affecting four provinces in the northeastern region. Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin announced a significant surge in infections this month, prompting health officials to expedite vaccine distribution to vulnerable groups, particularly children and the elderly.
As of January 25, there were 7,819 reported cases of influenza. However, this figure escalated to a staggering 99,057 by February 15, resulting in nine fatalities. The ministry indicated that schools have seen the highest concentration of cases, with children aged 5-9 being particularly at risk. Nakhon Ratchasima, Surin, Buri Ram, and Chaiyaphum reported a combined total of approximately 6,938 patients.
Minister Somsak urged individuals exhibiting flu-like symptoms to remain at home to curb the spread of the virus.
Influenza cases in Thailand have been steadily increasing, with reported numbers rising from about 472,000 in 2023 to 668,000 in the previous year, according to the Department of Disease Control. Current projections suggest that this year’s figures will likely surpass last year’s, given that nearly 100,000 cases have already been reported from January 1 to February 3.
The H1N1 strain remains the predominant virus in circulation within Thailand, as stated by health officials. Leading virologist Yong Poovorawan from Chulalongkorn University recently advised travelers to the northern hemisphere to receive influenza vaccinations at least two weeks prior to traveling.
Dr. Yong encouraged maintaining calm as the flu is seasonal, emphasizing that Thailand does not currently face the same strain affecting Japan. “Influenza is seasonal. It spreads in the cold season in the northern and southern hemispheres,” he stated.
This situation has gained public attention, particularly following the unfortunate passing of a well-known Taiwanese actress due to influenza while in Japan, further highlighting the seriousness of the ongoing flu outbreak.
