Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has asserted that even the least effective police officers are preferable to the most skilled criminals. This statement was made during his meeting with the newly appointed Commissioner of Police, Mustapha Mohammed, at Government House in Port Harcourt.
Fubara emphasized that his administration has no lingering animosity toward the Nigeria Police Force, despite some officers’ attempts to disrupt governance in the state. He affirmed that his administration stands as a supportive ally to the police in their mission to safeguard the lives and property of all Rivers residents.
During the meeting, the governor expressed his commitment to collaboration, stating, “The worst police officer is still better than the best criminal. We must embrace you as our allies.” He highlighted the crucial role of the police in protecting citizens and reiterated the necessity of teamwork, despite any past disagreements.
He clarified, “This government, as it stands today, has no personal issues with the Nigeria Police Force, particularly the Rivers State Command.” Fubara also emphasized his administration’s dedication to providing the essential support that the police need to thrive in their efforts to combat crime.
Fubara urged police officers to maintain high ethical standards, remarking, “I will never instruct any police officer to act unlawfully. It is essential to reflect on your actions and their consequences.” He noted that the prevailing peace in the state has reduced the need for police intervention, underscoring the importance of professionalism.
The governor called for the police to actively pursue criminals in their communities and advocated for effective community policing strategies to further minimize crime. He stated, “While we cannot eliminate crime entirely, we can work diligently to reduce it.”
In his address, the police chief shared that he has been acclimating to his new role while handling various assignments from headquarters. He reiterated his commitment to fostering a safe and peaceful Rivers State, seeking the governor’s support in these efforts.
