Tokyo, ECNETNews – During a recent working visit to Japan, the Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR), Basuki Hadimuljono, engaged in a significant bilateral meeting with Japan’s Minister of Defense, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism, Tetsuo Saito, on Thursday (Sept 26).
In this important meeting, Minister Hadimuljono outlined four key infrastructure cooperation agendas between Indonesia and Japan.
Firstly, he provided updates on the follow-up to the 10th World Water Forum, which took place in Bali, Indonesia, in May 2024. Minister Hadimuljono expressed his appreciation for Japan’s comprehensive support during the implementation of the forum.
“One of the outcomes is the Indonesian government’s proposal for World Lake Day, scheduled for August 27 to honor the World Lake Conference held in 1984. We also plan to study sustainable lake management and conservation by visiting Lake Biwa,” he stated.
Secondly, the Minister mentioned meeting with the Secretary-General of the Japan Water Forum, Toshiro Takemura, to discuss preparations for the upcoming 5th Asia Pacific Water Summit (APWS) in 2027. Indonesia is poised to host this critical event, showcasing its commitment to collaboration with the Japanese government.
Minister Hadimuljono officially signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with the Japan Water Forum, emphasizing the importance of the 5th APWS as a platform to build on outcomes from the 10th World Water Forum. He plans to advance the LoI into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will encompass detailed themes, timelines, and the formation of a joint organizing committee starting in early 2025.
Moreover, the Minister acknowledged Japan’s vital support in establishing a Center of Excellence for Water and Climate Resilience through collaborative efforts.
The Ministry, represented by Director General of Water Resources Bob Arthur Lombogia, also entered into an MoU with the Sabo Technical Center (STC) and the JICA representative in Indonesia during the 10th World Water Forum. This partnership aims to enhance STC’s role as a Sabo Technology Training Center and contribute to the Center of Excellence for Water and Climate Resilience, benefiting both the Asia-Pacific and African countries.
Lastly, Minister Hadimuljono sought expert assistance for quality assurance in the construction of Indonesia’s new capital city, Nusantara (IKN). He expressed that this support would be crucial in ensuring that IKN meets the highest construction standards.
