Ratan Tata, a titan of the Indian business world, has passed away at the age of 86, as confirmed by the Tata Group, the conglomerate he steered for over two decades.
Widely recognized as one of India’s most influential business figures, Tata guided the Tata Group, one of the nation’s largest conglomerates, which boasts annual revenues exceeding $100 billion.
The current chairman of Tata Sons expressed deep sorrow at Tata’s passing, referring to him as a “truly uncommon leader” and extending condolences to his family. He emphasized that Tata’s legacy would continue to inspire future generations in upholding the principles he passionately championed.
Throughout his leadership, Tata executed high-profile acquisitions, including the purchase of Corus, Jaguar, Land Rover, and Tetley. His contributions significantly impacted global industries, with tributes highlighting his role in shaping modern business landscapes.
UK Business Secretary recognized Tata as a “titan of the business world,” noting his profound influence on British industry. A 2011 profile described him as the most powerful businessman in India and one of the most prominent figures globally.
After retiring in 2012, Tata was named chairman emeritus of Tata Sons. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to him as a “visionary business leader,” expressing his personal sorrow over Tata’s death and recalling their numerous interactions.
Born into a traditional Parsi family in 1937, Tata pursued architecture and structural engineering at Cornell University, later joining Tata Industries as an assistant. His journey through various Tata companies culminated in becoming the group’s chairman in 1991, appointed by his mentor, JRD Tata.
In 2008, he received the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honor, recognizing his significant contributions to business and society.

Despite facing controversy during his tenure, including the ousting of his successor, Tata remained a beloved figure.
