Ravichandran Ashwin Achieves Milestone as India Dominates Bangladesh in First Test
Ravichandran Ashwin showcased his remarkable talent by achieving his 37th five-wicket haul, leading India to a commanding 280-run victory over Bangladesh in the first Test match. Ashwin recorded impressive figures of 6-88, while Ravindra Jadeja supported with a notable 3-58, effectively bowling out Bangladesh for 234 as they pursued an unachievable target of 515 runs.
With this victory, India now holds a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series, heading into the final match scheduled for Friday in Kanpur. The Indian bowlers made quick work of the Bangladesh batting lineup, claiming the six required wickets within the first session of day four.
Ashwin, who also contributed significantly with the bat by scoring his sixth Test century in the first innings and received the Player of the Match award in his hometown, reflected on his performance: “The first innings was an opportunity to dig deep, and Jadeja helped me get through the tough phases. It was a special knock that didn’t sink in until day two. I’m glad I ended up with a few wickets today as well.”
After resuming on an overnight score of 158-4, Bangladesh began strongly but eventually succumbed to Indian pressure. Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto and veteran all-rounder Shakib al Hasan provided initial resistance, adding 36 runs in the first hour. However, Ashwin broke through by taking Shakib’s wicket shortly after the drinks break. Jadeja followed suit by claiming Litton Das and Ashwin later secured a five-wicket haul with Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s dismissal.
Shanto’s resistance ended when he tried to accelerate the scoring, eventually falling for 82 runs. Ashwin claimed his sixth wicket with the dismissal of Taskin Ahmed. Jadeja sealed the comprehensive victory in just 63 overs, as Bangladesh faltered, losing their last six wickets for only 40 runs just before lunch.
This victory sets the stage for an exciting conclusion to the series, with India looking to extend their dominance in the final match.
