India and Canada have engaged in a diplomatic showdown, expelling senior diplomats amid escalating tensions surrounding the assassination of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil last year.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that his government’s actions were prompted by new evidence indicating the involvement of Indian agents in Nijjar’s murder. Trudeau stated that as credible allegations surfaced, action was necessary to safeguard public safety and disrupt ongoing criminal activities attributed to foreign elements.
In response, Indian officials vehemently denied the accusations, labeling them as politically motivated and aimed at appeasing Canada’s Sikh population. The Indian government expressed outrage, asserting that allegations of its involvement in violent acts were baseless.
In a televised address, Trudeau emphasized the gravity of the situation, highlighting the findings of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the pressing need for accountability. He stated, “The evidence brought to light cannot be ignored… It leads to one conclusion.”
