Delhi braces for more rain on August 1, as the meteorological department predicts continued downpours following recent heavy showers that left significant areas of the city inundated, causing severe traffic disruptions and stranding residents.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Salwan station in East Delhi’s Mayur Vihar reported an impressive 147.5 mm of rainfall from 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday to 7:15 a.m. on Thursday.
In addition, the Najafgarh station registered 113 mm of rainfall, while Lodhi Road, Delhi University, and Safdarjung observatories recorded 107.5 mm, 104.5 mm, and 105.6 mm of rain, respectively.
The Delhi Police have alerted commuters to avoid the Mundka area due to heavy waterlogging, advising travelers to take alternate routes as traffic is severely affected on Rohtak Road.
Spike in Waterlogging Complaints
On Wednesday evening, the Delhi Traffic Police received over 50 reports of waterlogging from across the city between 6 p.m. and midnight. The control room documented approximately 50 calls regarding waterlogged conditions and numerous reports of traffic jams.
Tragically, a drowning incident occurred on Wednesday when a 22-year-old woman and her three-year-old son slipped into a drain in Ghazipur due to the excessive waterlogging. This incident took place near the Khoda Colony area, where a roadside drain was under construction.
In response to the ongoing weather conditions, Delhi Education Minister announced that all schools in the city will remain closed on Thursday to ensure the safety of students.
