The Inspector General of Police has issued a strong warning against assaults on police officers, stating that any attack on personnel of the Nigeria Police Force will prompt a decisive response. During a visit to the Enugu State Police Command, the Inspector General emphasized that such acts are criminal and challenge the integrity of the institution, vowing a zero-tolerance policy for violence against officers in 2025.
He reiterated that assaults against police personnel are not only criminal offenses but also direct attacks on the entire force. The Inspector General assured that there will be a collective response to any killing or assault on officers to ensure that justice is served.
He stated, “We will not tolerate any assault on our police officers, let alone killings. An assault on a policeman is an assault on the Inspector General, and we will take serious measures against such actions.”
The commitment to a zero-tolerance approach stems from the need to safeguard police personnel and maintain public order. The Inspector General also highlighted ongoing efforts in collaboration with the federal government to enhance officer welfare.
In recent actions, the police force has demonstrated its commitment to justice, shown by its investigation into the alleged assault of a Bolt driver involving a federal lawmaker.
The Inspector General praised the professionalism of Enugu State officers while addressing concerns about a small number of rogue individuals potentially damaging the force’s reputation.
He assured the officers, “I recognize the dedication and diligence you exhibit in your duties. I have received commendations from the governor regarding your exemplary work.”
Looking ahead to 2025, he expressed determination to eradicate criminal activities, reaffirming his support for the command with necessary resources to build upon their successes.
The Inspector General emphasized the focus on professionalism, ethical conduct, and ongoing training for officers. He committed to providing modern policing tools and addressing personnel welfare, recognizing the sacrifices made by police officers.
He concluded with a reminder: “No Inspector General will neglect the welfare of his officers. Responding to rumors and misinformation, he highlighted that any claims suggesting otherwise are efforts by detractors to sow discord.”
