Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has announced that the Ibadan circular road project will significantly enhance industrial growth and create job opportunities in the region.
During a meeting with protesters at the Secretariat in Ibadan, who demanded a halt to the ongoing demolitions along the road, the governor emphasized his administration’s commitment to listening to the concerns of the community. He stated, “We are executing the circular road project to generate employment for our residents and establish industries along the corridor.”
Governor Makinde assured the public that no land had been acquired for the corridor, contrasting his administration’s approach with that of previous governments. He reminded residents that former Governors Lam Adesina and Rashidi Ladoja maintained a 150-meter mark, while the administration of former Governor Abiola Ajimobi expanded this to an additional 350 meters.
Addressing the protesters, the governor emphasized that any structures built within the 500-meter corridor, but outside the original 150-meter mark, would be considered in the ongoing development plans. He urged community members to appoint representatives to collaborate with the government on accommodating their needs.
Makinde advised those who have not yet commenced projects within the corridor to pause their activities, pledging that they would also be integrated into the new arrangement. He confirmed, “There will not be any demolitions for now, and I have directed that current demolition activities must stop immediately.”
Reassuring residents, he stated, “Anyone already with a building between the 150-meter and 500-meter marks will not face demolition, but no further developments can occur in that corridor.”
The governor expressed gratitude towards the protesters for their peaceful demeanor and reiterated his administration’s dedication to prioritizing the welfare of Oyo State residents while focusing on sustainable development.
In response, representatives from the affected communities, including Prince Niyi Fasoye, Chief Olaniran Ere Asalatu, and Mr. Azeez Olaide, thanked the governor for his positive engagement and praised the ongoing Ibadan Circular Road project for its role in fostering development in the area.
