ECNETNews has learned that LinkedIn, a prominent professional networking platform, is utilizing user data to enhance its generative AI capabilities—an advancement that caught the attention of users recently.
A new feature has emerged in the data privacy settings, labeled “Data for Generative AI Improvement,” prompting discussions among its user base.
The feature description clarifies that it allows LinkedIn to “use your personal data and content you create on LinkedIn to train generative AI models that generate content.” Importantly, this setting is enabled by default.
Concerns have been raised, particularly since LinkedIn reportedly initiated this AI training procedure without revising its terms of service to adequately inform users.
For those who wish to prevent LinkedIn and associated third parties from using their data for generative AI training, follow these steps:
How to Disable LinkedIn’s AI Training
-
Log into your LinkedIn account.
-
Click on your profile picture in the header menu and select Settings & Privacy from the dropdown menu.
-
Navigate to Data privacy from the left-hand side menu.
-
Select the Data for Generative AI Improvement option at the bottom of the How LinkedIn uses your data section.
-
Toggle the switch for “Use my data for training content creation AI models” to the off position.
It is worth noting that due to rigorous EU data privacy regulations, LinkedIn is not employing the data of EU users for its AI training initiatives. As stated in a communication from the company, “We are initially making this setting available to members whose profile location is outside of the EU, EEA, or Switzerland. If you reside in these regions, we and our affiliates will not use your personal data or content on LinkedIn to train or fine-tune generative AI models for content generation without further notice.”
