In a dramatic turn of events, the Adamawa State Police Command successfully intervened on Saturday night, rescuing a young man who had climbed a 33kV high-tension electricity pole in Mayo-Belwa Local Government Area. The individual was adamant that he would not descend until President Bola Tinubu resigned from his position.
SP Suleiman Nguruje, the police command’s public relations officer, confirmed on Sunday evening that the unnamed man was safely brought down and is currently in the custody of the police in the state capital. According to Nguruje, the individual will be paraded before the public on Monday and faces charges for attempted suicide, a criminal offense under Nigerian law.
Nguruje emphasized the police’s responsibility to protect lives and stated that any actions by individuals jeopardizing their own safety will be met with legal consequences. He further noted that the police must uphold the law in such situations.
Witnesses reported that on Friday, market-goers were left in shock as the man climbed the electricity pole near the Yola-Jalingo highway during the market day, asserting he would remain there until the president vacated the presidential villa. Despite numerous pleas from onlookers, he was resolute in his decision.
The police command enlisted local community members to assist in persuading the young man to come down, which was achieved late Saturday night. Upon visiting the police headquarters on Sunday evening, it was revealed that the individual was now under protective custody within the Criminal Investigating Department of the Adamawa Police Command.
