Delhi Police have uncovered a significant insurance fraud scheme in Najafgarh involving a father and son who conspired to fake the son’s death in order to claim an insurance payout of Rs 1 crore. A lawyer allegedly assisted them in orchestrating this elaborate deception.
The fraudulent scheme began when the father purchased a Rs 1 crore insurance policy for his son, Gagan, just months before the supposed accident. On March 5, the family reported that Gagan had suffered injuries in a road accident in Najafgarh. Initially treated for minor injuries at a local hospital, Gagan was said to have been referred to a larger facility but never actually attended.
Soon after, the father announced that his son had died from his injuries and proceeded to conduct funeral rites to create the illusion of his passing.
However, the case took a dramatic turn on March 11 when an individual walked into the Najafgarh police station claiming involvement in an accident on March 5 that resulted in someone’s death. This prompted the police to launch an investigation, revealing a lack of records for an accident and no hospital documents confirming the death.
As the investigation unfolded, authorities discovered that no accident or death had occurred. Growing suspicious, they examined insurance records and noted the recent acquisition of a Rs 1 crore policy for Gagan by his father.
Under increased scrutiny, both the father and son eventually admitted to fabricating the entire incident based on their lawyer’s guidance to illegally obtain the insurance money.
Both individuals are now in police custody.
