BEL AIR, Md. — A tragic explosion in Bel Air, Maryland, resulted in at least one fatality and two injuries on Sunday, following reports suggesting a potential gas leak, according to local fire officials.
Emergency responders received reports of a gas leak and unusual outdoor odors at around 6:40 a.m. As firefighters approached the scene, they were informed that the house had exploded. Unfortunately, first responders confirmed one victim deceased at the site.
A neighboring home suffered significant damage, leading to the treatment of a woman for injuries at the scene. Additionally, a utility worker was injured, although it has not been confirmed if their presence was related to the explosion, as two utility workers were already in the area addressing an electrical issue.
Investigators are currently assessing the extent of the damage across the neighborhood and determining the blast radius. Firefighters continued searching through the debris for any possible additional victims about 30 miles northeast of Baltimore. Authorities confirmed there is no ongoing risk to the local community.

Fire officials noted the exploded home was listed for sale, though it remains unclear if it was occupied at the time of the incident.
Over 60 first responders from various agencies rushed to the scene, with the state fire marshal, sheriff’s office, and federal investigators joining the ongoing inquiry, adhering to standard protocols for such incidents.
Residents in the area described the explosion’s impact. One nearby resident stated the blast disturbed her family and even knocked her pet bird to the ground. She reported structural damage to her condominium and expressed concerns for her family’s safety.
Her 8-year-old daughter conveyed her shock, saying, “I thought a bomb dropped,” showcasing the fear felt by many in the vicinity.
