Severe weather conditions have struck Jharkhand, as continuous rain prompted the Weather Department to issue an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall across various regions of the state on Monday, September 16, 2024.
The local meteorological office has predicted a potential end to the relentless rain that has persisted for two days, forecasting relief in the next 48 hours.
Significant rainfall resulted in the washing away of several culverts and diversions, particularly affecting the Garhwa and Latehar districts. The heavy downpour, combined with strong winds, has also inflicted damage on standing paddy crops, causing concern among farmers.
Meral in Garhwa district reported the highest rainfall in the state at 152.8 mm on Sunday, September 15, 2024. Meanwhile, Ranchi’s Budmu area recorded 112.2 mm, and Daltonganj experienced over 110 mm of rainfall.
An orange alert has been specifically issued for the northwest regions, including Garhwa, Palamu, Chatra, and Latehar, according to the Ranchi Meteorological Centre. Residents in low-lying areas are urged to remain vigilant due to the potential for flooding.
The weather system is gradually progressing westward and is expected to cross Jharkhand within the next 24 hours. Widespread rainfall is anticipated today, with a substantial decrease expected on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, when light to moderate rain is forecasted in parts of the state.
Since June 1, Jharkhand has recorded a total rainfall of 822.2 mm, compared to the normal of 920.8 mm for the same period, indicating a shortfall of 11%.
