Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris is set to embark on a two-day campaign visit to Wisconsin and Michigan, while Republican candidate Donald Trump is scheduled to hold an event in Michigan as both candidates aim to secure victories in key “blue wall” battleground states, which also include Pennsylvania.
In a notable event, Liz Cheney, a prominent critic of Trump within the Republican Party, will join Harris in Wisconsin for a campaign rally aimed at appealing to moderate voters and challenging Trump’s influence.
Cheney, who gained notoriety as the leading Republican on the House committee investigating the January 6 insurrection, has faced significant backlash from Trump supporters and has distanced herself from the party following her vocal opposition to the former president.
After losing her Wyoming seat to a Trump-backed candidate two years ago, Cheney endorsed Harris last month. The pair will appear together at a historic white schoolhouse in Ripon, a site significant for its role in the founding of the Republican Party in the 1850s.
Harris’ Wisconsin visit comes on the heels of a federal judge unsealing a detailed court filing against Trump regarding his attempts to contest the results of the 2020 election, to which he has pleaded not guilty on charges of conspiracy and obstruction.
On Friday, Harris will continue her campaign with a rally in Flint, Michigan, reinforcing her presence in states pivotal for Democratic success. During the 2016 election, Trump secured wins in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan, while Biden reversed those outcomes in 2020.
Trump will also hold a rally in Saginaw County, a critical area in Michigan, known for its swing voting tendencies. His recent focus on Michigan includes two rallies he conducted there just days prior, with the narrow voter margin in counties like Saginaw playing a crucial role in Biden’s 2020 victory.
In other election-related news, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp will make his first appearance alongside Trump since their public disputes over the 2020 election results. Both will survey damage from Hurricane Helene in Evans, Georgia.
As the election dynamics shift, Trump has secured $160 million in campaign funds for September, positioning him with $283 million heading into the final stretch. Conversely, Harris has reportedly raised significant funds during recent campaign events in California and New York.
In Michigan, the crowd for Trump’s speech was visibly subdued, indicative of the shifting energy in the campaign. Meanwhile, Melania Trump has openly supported abortion rights, highlighting a stark contrast with her husband’s stance on this vital issue.
President Joe Biden, addressing the media regarding the tight race, expressed confidence in Harris’s campaign, stating that such close margins are common in political contests. He emphasized the importance of addressing the critical issue of climate change, which has gained renewed attention following the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene.
Biden visited the Carolinas to assess hurricane damage and is expected to travel to Georgia and Florida later this week to support recovery efforts.
