ECNETNews, October 9, 2024: A new pipeline that will facilitate the transportation of natural gas in Guyana has been successfully connected to two floating production platforms. This significant development was announced by the head of operations in Guyana, marking a crucial milestone in the country’s energy sector.
The ambitious “Gas-to-Energy” project, initiated by the Guyanese government, aims to power a 300-megawatt power plant and a natural gas liquids (NGL) facility using gas sourced from two Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels located in the Stabroek block.
Spanning 200 kilometers (124.3 miles), the pipeline is expected to be operational by the end of this year. The project, which is on track for completion next year, promises to lower electricity costs and minimize emissions, representing a landmark achievement in the utilization of associated gas produced within the country.
Guyana has committed around $400 million to this pivotal initiative, demonstrating its dedication to diversifying its energy portfolio and promoting sustainability.
During the third quarter, the consortium paused oil and gas output at the platforms to enable the pipeline connection effectively. Testing and de-watering processes have already been conducted to ensure functionality and efficiency.
Once fully operational, the “Gas-to-Energy” project is set to deliver more reliable and affordable energy options for Guyana, driving industrial growth and decreasing reliance on imported energy sources. This strategic endeavor is poised to solidify Guyana’s emerging position as a leading energy producer in the region.
