GEORGETOWN, GUYANA – In a significant move to uplift the nation’s youth, President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali recently introduced a comprehensive initiative aimed at enhancing housing and agricultural opportunities for 27 young athletes from Georgetown. The initiative focuses on modern agricultural practices, specifically the establishment of a tunnel house dedicated to poultry farming.
This collaborative venture allows the athletes to invest in a state-of-the-art facility. President Ali emphasized the critical role of coaching and innovative projects in maximizing youth potential during his address to the participants.
“It is essential for young people to fully utilize their potential, and coaching plays a vital role in making informed decisions while enjoying life,” stated President Ali.
He detailed the financial framework of the program, indicating that each athlete would invest approximately $300,000 to contribute to the overall cost of a $50 million tunnel house, capable of housing around 45,000 chickens. This facility is anticipated to generate an annual net revenue ranging from $20 to $25 million.
To facilitate this agricultural endeavor, a special financing window has been established by the bank, offering agriculture loans at a favorable interest rate of 4.5 percent, along with a tax exemption on the interest.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Agriculture will provide essential training to ensure participants effectively manage the tunnel house while balancing their other commitments.
Addressing housing needs, President Ali reassured the athletes of allocations for their professional homes through an expedited banking process. He highlighted that the capital investment is expected to be recouped within two years, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to fostering economic development and prosperity.
“We aim to eliminate barriers and reduce bureaucracy to enable you to achieve greatness for yourselves and your families, which ultimately contributes to the nation’s success,” the president emphasized.
Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha discussed the evolving perceptions of agriculture among young people, noting a significant shift in interest levels.
“Today, we witness thousands of young individuals engaging in agriculture, demonstrating a newfound enthusiasm,” remarked Minister Mustapha, commending President Ali’s transformative leadership in bolstering food security throughout the Caribbean with Guyana serving as a model.
Beneficiaries of the initiative expressed their appreciation for the timely intervention. “The entrepreneurial opportunity provided by this initiative is commendable,” stated Selwyn Robertson.
Similarly, Lionel Holder expressed his satisfaction, saying, “Today, I am thrilled to commence housing arrangements and witness the president’s remarkable efforts.”
Ronaldo Griffith praised the initiative, highlighting its groundbreaking nature and the ease of engagement with the head of state, stating, “It is impressive to see such swift developments in just a few hours.”
This initiative marks the first phase of a broader plan aimed at extending similar opportunities across various regions, including the East Coast, East Bank, West Coast, and West Bank, while also empowering women.
Additionally, approximately 36 sports grounds nationwide are nearing completion, further enhancing youth engagement and development within the sports sector.
