ECNETNews, July 23, 2024: Guyana has urgently called for an immediate ceasefire in the escalating Gaza conflict, stressing the critical need to prioritize civilian protection. As the death toll in Gaza approaches 40,000, with reports confirming an additional 84 fatalities and 329 injuries today during a new Israeli ground invasion in Khan Younis, international concern grows.
“Mr. President, the silence regarding a potential resolution to the Gaza war has been profound,” stated a representative at the UN Security Council, reflecting Guyana’s hope for change following resolution 2735 adopted five weeks ago, which aimed to support diplomatic efforts. Despite these initiatives, violence continues to ravage Gaza.
The diplomat recognized the roles of key nations involved in peace efforts, underscoring the Council’s responsibility to persist in their attempts to halt the conflict. “Palestinians face a multilayered catastrophe, and it is imperative that we strive for an end to their suffering,” the representative emphasized.
Highlighting the severe consequences of the conflict, the statement outlined how the tragedy affects all aspects of Palestinian life, with oppression, destruction, and deprivation being the main characteristics of the crisis. “Even amid immense suffering, Palestinians look to the United Nations for hope and resolution,” the representative noted.
The ambassador condemned Israel’s actions, describing them as a “barbaric war” that has disproportionately victimized women and children. “Life in the Gaza Strip is marked by bombings, starvation, and a lack of essential services, robbing civilians of their basic survival needs,” the diplomat lamented.
Additionally, concerns were raised about barriers to humanitarian aid, as the ongoing conflict severely limits the influx of assistance despite the Kerem Shalom crossing being operational. The representative emphasized that continued bombardment and lawlessness worsen the humanitarian situation.
Condemning attacks on civilian infrastructure—such as healthcare facilities and schools—the call for an end to violence was reiterated. “What justifies the ongoing killing of innocent lives and the destruction of schools and hospitals? This wanton violence must be condemned in the strongest terms,” the ambassador stated.
Guyana is also insisting that UN member states fulfill their international law obligations, particularly concerning humanitarian law, while highlighting the need for protections for UN personnel and facilities. Furthermore, immediate action is urged for the unconditional release of all hostages and detained Palestinians, in line with various Council resolutions.
The diplomat reaffirmed that Israel, as the occupying power, has a duty to ensure humanitarian access, echoing the International Court of Justice’s demands. Calls for de-escalation in the West Bank and East Jerusalem were made to mitigate violence between Palestinians and Israelis. Tragically, recent incursions have added to the death toll, further emphasizing the urgency of addressing the crisis.
