A group of armed assailants has targeted a police checkpoint near the Nnobi Police Station along the Nnobi/Nkpor Road in Anambra State’s Idemili South Local Government Area.
The incident occurred late on Friday when the attackers reportedly ambushed the location. This attack follows a similar incident less than three weeks prior, where gunmen assaulted a police checkpoint on Omata-Nnobi Road in Nnewi, killing one police officer and utilizing explosives during the assault.
Local sources indicated that during the recent attack, one policeman was fatally shot, with reports suggesting he was the driver of a police vehicle. Eyewitness accounts revealed that the attackers infiltrated the community and took refuge in a nearby house before breaking through a wall to enter the compound. They coerced residents into opening their gates to enable their vehicles’ entry.
Residents were also reportedly stripped of their mobile phones and confined to a room, where they were threatened against alerting authorities under the threat of violence.
The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer has confirmed the attack while assuring the public that the situation is being addressed. An operation is currently underway in the area under the direction of the State Police Commissioner.
