Austria Striker Guido Burgstaller Suffers Serious Head Injury in Violent Attack
In a shocking incident, Austria striker Guido Burgstaller sustained a skull fracture after being assaulted in the heart of Vienna. His club Rapid Vienna confirmed that the 35-year-old forward is anticipated to face several months on the sidelines due to this significant head injury sustained over the weekend.
Reports indicate that Burgstaller was struck by an unknown assailant, leading to the "serious head injury" as he fell from the impact. Following the incident, he received immediate medical attention at the scene before being transported to a local hospital, where he is expected to remain for several days for further treatment.
Rapid Vienna has expressed their trust in law enforcement, emphasizing their hope that the perpetrator of this violent act is brought to justice swiftly.
Burgstaller, who boasts 26 international caps for Austria, previously joined Cardiff City in 2014, marking the club’s second signing under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. His stint with the Bluebirds saw him make just three appearances before he transitioned to German club Nurnberg.
The seasoned striker has also played for Schalke and St. Pauli in Germany before returning to Rapid Vienna in 2022. Notably, Burgstaller was one of three Austrian players excluded by manager Ralf Rangnick in 2023 after their involvement in a controversy surrounding homophobic chants during a celebration following a victory against local rivals Austria Vienna.
