The Kano Peace Committee has issued a strong warning to the youth of Kano against participating in the upcoming protest on October 1. Concerns have been raised about potential violence that could result in harm to both public and private properties.
This caution coincides with Nigeria’s observance of its 64th Independence anniversary, where the committee underscores the crucial need for unity and peaceful coexistence among citizens.
Ibrahim Waiya, the Convener and Head of the Secretariat for the KPC, alleged in an official statement that there is a concerted effort to mobilize youths in Kano for an “End bad Governance” protest, labeling this initiative as “misleading, unpatriotic, and ill-timed.” Waiya highlighted the severe repercussions from prior protests that took place from August 1-10, 2024, which resulted in extensive damage and loss.
“Kano State faced devastating consequences, with billions lost and lives affected,” Waiya stated, pointing out that the protests negatively impacted the region’s economy and tarnished its reputation. He also reminded young people that many individuals from the previous protests remain imprisoned and have been left unsupported by their instigators.
Waiya urged the youth to think critically and steered clear of manipulation by self-serving politicians. “It’s time to free ourselves from political exploitation and recognize our dignity as respected individuals within society,” he said.
The KPC commended the efforts of security agencies in maintaining peace and urged them to continue their work lawfully and professionally. Waiya concluded by calling for a collective effort to safeguard the integrity and peaceful coexistence in Kano State, emphasizing the need to protect the values that represent the region.
