The government is willing to engage in discussions concerning the issues of northern Karnataka, yet there appears to be a lack of interest from the current opposition party, stated Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar during a recent press briefing at Hubballi airport.
Shivakumar, who also serves as the KPCC president, expressed his concerns regarding the BJP’s indifference to matters related to Kalyan Karnataka and Mumbai Karnataka, as indicated by their behavior in both Houses of the legislature.
“BJP leaders are struggling with internal divisions and lack a coherent strategy for legislative discussions. Their focus seems to be on political maneuvering rather than prioritizing development,” he remarked in response to probing questions from the media.
When questioned about the government’s readiness for extensive discussions on irrigation with the winter session drawing to a close, the irrigation minister affirmed his willingness to engage but emphasized the need to address multiple issues.
Updates on Mahadayi River Basin Projects
Regarding the Mahadayi river basin projects, Shivakumar called on Union Minister Pralhad Joshi and former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar to leverage their influence to ensure that Karnataka secures the necessary permits and approvals.
The state government has prepared to initiate the project and will commence work as soon as the required approvals are obtained. “I recently met with Union Forest Minister Bhupender Yadav and urged him to expedite the approval process for our proposals. Mr. Joshi has assured me that he too has spoken with the Forest Minister on this matter,” he shared.
Push for Mekedatu Project Approvals
“Upon the state government’s announcement of the Mekedatu project, both Shettar and Joshi expressed their support and celebrated the initiative. It is now crucial for them to advocate for us in securing all necessary approvals from the Union Government, particularly those from the forest department. Once those approvals are secured, we will proceed with the work,” Shivakumar said. He expressed confidence that the state government would obtain all requisite permissions.
Addressing the exclusion of BJP leaders in the FIR related to Covid irregularities, Shivakumar clarified that the case was filed based on findings from Justice Cunha’s committee report. “The officers will handle the follow-up. Our focus is not on pursuing investigations against BJP leaders,” stated the Deputy Chief Minister.
