The Thai government is set to leverage the upcoming Mekong-Lancang Cooperation (MLC) meeting to forge collaborations with neighboring countries aimed at combating the rise of call center scam syndicates.
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has directed the Foreign Minister to address the issue with representatives from participating nations, exploring effective strategies to tackle cross-border criminal activities, including call center fraud. The 9th MLC meeting is scheduled for Thursday and Friday in Chiang Mai.
Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa emphasized that regional collaboration is essential in curbing transnational crime, which extends to narcotics trafficking, human trafficking, and fraudulent schemes. He noted that Laos, China, and India have prioritized addressing transnational crime and are committed to enhancing cooperation on these issues.
Thailand is prepared to advocate for this agenda within the MLC framework, expressing appreciation to Laos for intensifying its efforts against call center scams in the Golden Triangle region.
During the 9th MLC meeting, Prime Minister Srettha is expected to deliver a keynote address titled “Towards Safer and Cleaner Mekong Lancang” on Friday.
A joint press conference will follow the MLC foreign affairs ministers meeting, featuring statements from the Thai Foreign Minister and his Chinese counterpart.
The MLC framework includes six member countries: Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, and China. Established in 2012 at Thailand’s initiative, the framework aims to strengthen regional cooperation with a focus on sustainable development, reducing inequalities, and fostering ASEAN collaboration.
