The government is taking decisive measures to protect its citizens from scams reportedly linked to organizations operating in border areas. Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai stated that the government’s primary focus is on eliminating threats posed by these fraudulent networks.
Mr. Phumtham emphasized that the government will remain steadfast in its actions, despite any calls for boycotts from Myanmar. He highlighted the dependency of border communities on Thai consumer goods, noting, “Without those necessities, they must fend for themselves.”
The Deputy Prime Minister confirmed that recent disruptions, including power, fuel, and internet cuts to five communities in the Tachileik, Myawaddy, and Payathonzu regions, are part of a broader strategy to dismantle scam operations. Reports indicate that, while local communities face these cuts, entertainment venues operated by the scammers continue to function using private generators.
In addition to cutting services, Thai authorities are ramping up efforts to curb smuggling activities in these border zones. This intensified campaign comes after years of limited action, catalyzed by discussions with international officials regarding the criminal operations near Thailand’s borders. These centers are known to employ deceptive practices and have reportedly exploited both Thai and Chinese nationals.
In a proactive move, Mr. Phumtham plans to visit Payathonzu on February 12 and Poipet in Cambodia on February 16 to assess the situation before determining any further actions. He warned that additional border areas involved with these scams could also face similar service disruptions.
