As anticipation builds for Super Bowl LIX, a Google commercial slated to air during the event is facing significant criticism.
Intended to highlight the capabilities of its Gemini AI chatbot, the advertisement has drawn backlash for allegedly fabricating its AI content. Specifically, the commercial features a business named Wisconsin Cheese Mart, which claims that Gemini generated a product description for gouda cheese. However, this so-called AI-generated text appears to be directly copied from the Wisconsin Cheese Mart website, with records revealing its existence dating back to at least 2020.
“Gouda is a Dutch cheese named after the city of Gouda in the Netherlands. It is one of the most popular cheeses in the world, accounting for 50 to 60 percent of the world’s cheese consumption. Smoked Gouda is a variant of this famous cheese, smoked in brick ovens over flaming hickory chip embers. This sweet curd is similar to Edam except that it contains more milk fat, which gives it a creamier texture and causes it to become more buttery with age. Sensational with beer, this cows milk cheese has an edible, smokey brown rind and a creamy, yellow interior.”
Furthermore, Gemini was introduced three years after the original text was created, raising questions about its authenticity. Alarmingly, the commercial had to be modified after it was discovered that a statement sourced from Gemini about gouda being the most widely consumed cheese globally was actually inaccurate.
This implies that the only accurate statement in the commercial was crafted by a human long before Gemini’s inception, while the sole contribution from Gemini has proven to be false. There must be a more credible approach to promoting generative AI technology.
