In a bid to further enhance the thriving tourism sector in Kashmir, the administration of Jammu and Kashmir has announced a marathon event scheduled for October 20 in Srinagar, inviting both foreign and domestic athletes.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha unveiled the marathon’s logo and dedicated website at the Kashmir International Convention Centre, emphasizing that this event is designed to amplify tourism potential in the region. The Kashmir marathon will feature two categories: a full 42 km marathon and a 21 km half marathon.
“Kashmir offers the ideal climate and setting for this marathon, providing unique livelihood opportunities for local youth,” stated Mr. Sinha.
This marks the fourth major initiative this year focused on promoting tourism in Jammu and Kashmir. The administration has previously hosted a F4 car racing event, the Sunburn Music Festival, and the J&K Tourism Development Conclave.
“We aim to make this marathon a symbol of peace and unity. I believe this event will establish Jammu and Kashmir on the global running map, enhancing recognition of the Union Territory as a premier tourist destination,” added Mr. Sinha.
“We anticipate global participants, with Kashmir set to host this remarkable event in October. Each participant will become an ambassador for the Valley’s breathtaking scenery and tourism potential,” he continued.
The marathon route is planned to showcase the Valley’s stunning landscapes, including chinar trees, Mughal gardens, and the tranquil Dal Lake, according to officials.
Referring to the upcoming event as “historic,” Mr. Sinha assured that all arrangements will be finalized within the next two months, stating, “This event will send a powerful message of peace internationally.”
Since the abrogation of Article 370, the administration has successfully organized various events to showcase Kashmir’s tourism potential, dispelling its image as a conflict zone. Past events include the G-20 Tourism Summit and international conferences.
“Trade and tourism stakeholders will have an opportunity to present our unique cultural heritage and exceptional hospitality to participants from both India and abroad,” Mr. Sinha remarked.
He highlighted that such initiatives are intended to promote Jammu and Kashmir’s potential on a global scale, encourage eco-friendly tourism, and support health and wellness activities.
The region’s tourism policy is already yielding significant results, with over one crore tourists visiting Jammu and Kashmir by June of this year, according to official data.
“A series of measures, including the 2020 tourism policy and industry recognition, have significantly boosted tourism in Jammu and Kashmir,” stated the Minister of State for Home Affairs in Parliament.
