Geoff Barrow, co-founder of the influential band Beak>, has announced his departure from the group after their upcoming tour dates in Europe and North America. Barrow, who recently dealt with health issues related to his ankle, plans to focus on new projects, including his debut feature film set to release later this year.
In a statement, Beak> expressed their commitment to future endeavors, saying, “There’s life in the old dog yet, but we need time to mourn our Geoff. New music and activity will come along when the time is right.”
Reflecting on his journey, Barrow shared, “About 16 years ago, three like-minded musical strangers got together in a studio to make some music and didn’t care if anyone heard it or not. After four albums and hundreds of shows around the world, it has ended up being the most joyful musical journey I’ve ever experienced. In life, you know when it’s time to quit touring, and now’s that time for me.”
Barrow’s tenure with Beak> includes the release of four celebrated albums, characterized by explorative soundscapes distinct from his earlier work with Portishead. The band also released additional projects, showcasing their innovative approach to music. In his remarks, Barrow expressed enthusiasm for his new role as “Beak>’s idiotic & musically inept A&R person at Invada,” emphasizing his ongoing passion for music in a different capacity.
As fans reflect on Barrow’s remarkable contributions to the music scene, the future of Beak> remains promising, with anticipation for new developments on the horizon.
