The rising reliance on generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) may hinder the development of essential reading, writing, and analytical skills in future generations, experts caution.
Concerns have been raised over the potential for children raised in an AI-centric environment to miss out on cultivating these crucial competencies.
Insights shared during the recent AI Governance Webinar, organized by the AI Governance Centre under the Electronic Transactions Development Agency, highlighted the skills vital for thriving in the AI era.
Experts advocate that both young individuals and adults should focus on enhancing cognitive skills, including the capacity to think critically, analyze situations, solve complex problems, and effectively interact with AI.
Additionally, they stress the importance of asking strategic questions or generating prompts to maximize AI’s outputs.
Emotional intelligence and emotional management are becoming increasingly critical skills, as these are areas where AI currently lacks expertise.
Experts warn that an overreliance on AI could have detrimental effects, urging the need for responsible usage and governance of the technology.
To maximize the benefits of GenAI, a balanced approach that weighs potential advantages against risks is essential, guided by ethical considerations and effective governance from developers, users, and regulators.
At present, Thailand lacks specific legislation targeting AI usage, although existing laws address sensitive matters such as copyright, personal data protection, and cybersecurity.
Warnings surrounding AI include confabulation, where AI may produce responses that appear credible but are ultimately inaccurate, potentially leading to misunderstandings and poor decision-making.
Discrimination also poses a risk; if the data training GenAI contains biases, it could generate skewed or prejudiced outcomes.
Moreover, concerns arise regarding the creation of content that may infringe on copyrights through the use of GenAI.
Lastly, potential violations of personal data and privacy could emerge without stringent controls, as AI might unintentionally expose sensitive information without proper authorization.
