Microsoft is revolutionizing its approach by expanding the availability of its first-party games to competitors like PS5 and Nintendo Switch. This shift towards a multiplatform release strategy is seen as a boon for gamers and enhances the reach of Microsoft’s studios, as highlighted by the Head of Xbox Game Studios.
“This approach benefits gamers and our studios,” an Xbox executive stated during a recent podcast. “Our teams create outstanding games, and we aim to connect them with the widest audience possible.”
This aligns with Microsoft Gaming’s recent emphasis on inclusivity, stating that restricting game access offers no advantages to players and does not enhance the gaming experience.
Previously, the studio head noted that bringing “Sea of Thieves” to PS5 broadened its player base, facilitating cross-play and removing barriers. Upcoming titles, including “Forza Horizon 5” and “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle,” will launch on PS5 this spring, further underscoring this strategy. “It’s essential for gamers to have access to our titles across more platforms,” he added.
The executive emphasized that developers aspire for their creations to reach the largest audience possible, and making Xbox games available on rival systems is key to achieving this goal. “We are thrilled to provide that opportunity,” he remarked.
Moreover, the strategy is financially beneficial for Xbox, with insights suggesting that revenue generated from sales on PS5 helps fund future projects. While Microsoft earns 70% of the sales revenue from PS5, this income enables further investment in game development.
Microsoft’s approach to multiplatform releases varies; for instance, “Starfield” debuted exclusively on Xbox, while “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” was launched for Xbox and is set to arrive on PS5 this spring. In a notable move, “Doom: The Dark Ages” will be released simultaneously on Xbox and PlayStation this May.
