ECNETNews is reporting live from Chicago, delivering the latest updates on the Democratic National Convention.
In a poignant moment at the DNC, Giffords, a gun safety activist and former U.S. Representative, shared her personal journey with gun violence following heartfelt tributes from the families of shooting victims.
“For five years I served in Congress from a swing district. Everybody called me a rising star,” recalled Giffords, reflecting on her career before a traumatic incident changed her life. “Then… a man tried to assassinate me.”
Giffords, a representative until 2012, suffered a severe brain injury from the assassination attempt, which also injured 18 others and claimed six lives.
“I almost died. But I fought for my life and I survived,” Giffords continued. “I learned to walk again one step at a time. I learned to talk again one word at a time.”
In response to the tragedy, Giffords and Senator Kelly founded a gun violence prevention advocacy and research center, focusing on creating safer communities.
“My friend Kamala will be a great president. She is tough. She has grit,” Giffords stated confidently. “Kamala can beat the gun lobby.”
