WASHINGTON, USA – The Justice Department’s Antitrust Division and the Federal Trade Commission participated in the recent G7 Competition Authorities and Policymakers Summit aimed at fostering healthy competition in AI technologies, products, and applications.
Held in Rome under the auspices of the G7 Industry, Technology and Digital Ministerial Declaration, the summit saw significant contributions from U.S. officials, including principal deputy assistant attorney general Doha Mekki.
Mekki emphasized the importance of sharing the United States’ insights and best practices with international enforcement bodies to enhance the application of antitrust laws and unlock economic opportunities for the American populace. She acknowledged Italy for facilitating a vital discussion on AI competition.
The Summit concluded with a communiqué from the G7 competition authorities, which outlined potential competition concerns in AI markets and proposed guiding principles to maintain healthy competition. The document stressed the critical role of competition authorities in mitigating risks associated with concentrated market power in AI sectors and highlighted the need for vigilant enforcement against collusion and improper information sharing.
