- Travelers presenting non-compliant IDs will undergo enhanced screening procedures.
WASHINGTON, USA — The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has officially launched its REAL ID enforcement measures at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints across the country as of May 7, 2025. Most travelers will notice minimal changes, as 81 percent are already compliant with REAL ID regulations.
“REAL ID reinforces that travelers are accurately identified, helping to thwart fraud by criminals and terrorists,” stated a DHS spokesperson. “Enforcing this federal law enhances safety for all American travelers.”
The TSA will implement REAL ID measures without affecting wait times or screening processes for those who present a REAL ID, passport, or other acceptable identification. Travelers who show non-compliant state-issued IDs will be informed of their status and may be directed to a designated area for additional screening.
The TSA anticipates a rise in the number of travelers obtaining REAL IDs and will maintain enhanced screening procedures for those lacking compliance until it no longer poses a security risk.
