Full refunds are being issued to customers who purchased the inaccurately marketed N95 face mask from Razer. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) confirmed that checks and PayPal payments are being sent out to 6,764 buyers of the product.
In May 2024, the FTC revealed that a settlement was reached with Razer totaling over $1 million. The penalty stemmed from Razer’s claims that the face mask complied with N95 standards, despite it not undergoing necessary certification to verify its effectiveness in filtering out 95% of airborne particles, as required.
Launched during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the N95 face mask showcased its innovative RGB lighting and voice amplification features at CES in January 2021. The Razer Zephyr face mask was officially released in October 2021 for $100, but by January 2022, Razer had retracted its N95 claims regarding the mask.
While Razer disagreed with the FTC’s allegations during the settlement announcement, maintaining that they did not “admit to any wrongdoing,” the FTC has specified that recipients of refund checks must cash them within 90 days, while PayPal refunds must be redeemed within 30 days.
For detailed instructions on the refund process, individuals can contact Simpluris or refer to the FTC’s FAQ page. This is not the sole significant gaming refund recently, as player settlement refunds from Fortnite also commenced last month, totaling approximately $72 million.
