Microsoft has officially divested from the esports tournament platform Start.gg, previously known as Smash.gg. The announcement marks a significant shift for the platform, as it transitions back to its independent roots, focusing on supporting grassroots and professional esports communities.
Chris Ogle, co-founder of Smash.gg, expressed gratitude towards Microsoft for their support during the company’s tenure. He confirmed that the original team will remain intact, collaborating with grassroots tournament organizers and engineers dedicated to enhancing the platform’s offerings.
A notable upcoming change is the introduction of a registration fee starting February 14. This decision aims to cover operational costs and ensure the platform’s sustainability. In conjunction with this fee, Start.gg plans to launch improvements to its user interface and tournament features.
Ogle emphasized the platform’s mission since its inception in 2015: to cultivate esports communities centered around beloved games. This commitment continues to guide their initiatives moving forward.
Despite challenges in the gaming sector, the esports arena continues to thrive. Evo 2024 set a record as the largest esports competition to date, with Evo 2025 poised to build on this success in Las Vegas from August 1-3.
