Fort Kochi is set to experience a subdued New Year celebration this year as the Cochin Carnival committee has decided to cancel its planned events, including the traditional burning of the giant Pappanji at Parade Ground on New Year’s Eve. This decision comes in response to a week-long national mourning period following the passing of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The committee made this decision during an emergency meeting led by Sub Collector K. Meera. The cancellation is due to the involvement of Kochi Corporation funds and local representatives in the planned events, which is not permitted during a national mourning period.
District Collector N.S.K. Umesh has announced that the Carnival rally, one of the major highlights of the New Year festivities, will be postponed until January 2, following the conclusion of the mourning period on January 1. However, committee members are seeking approval from the Collector to hold the rally on January 1 after the mourning concludes at 5 p.m. They are also making efforts to reschedule other events occurring in the lead-up to New Year’s Eve to avoid a significant financial strain on the committee, which has already incurred expenses through sponsorship.
Interestingly, the giant Pappanji located at Veli Ground, approximately 2 km away from the Parade Ground, is now expected to become the centerpiece of the New Year celebrations. The police had previously ordered its dismantling for security reasons, prompting the organizers to seek permission from the Kerala High Court to proceed with the burning of the Pappanji.
A key organizer and councillor in the Kochi Corporation, Benedict Fernandez, confirmed that the Pappanji will be burned in accordance with the High Court’s directive.
Local resident Abish Puthussery, an IT professional, expressed that the sacrifices made in honor of Manmohan Singh are a fitting tribute, stating, “Our economy survived because of the revolutionary decision taken by the late Manmohan Singh to open our markets. So, there is nothing wrong in sacrificing a New Year in his respect.”
Homestay operators in Fort Kochi have voiced concerns that the cancellation of New Year events could significantly impact their seasonal business, as many visitors had planned their trips to coincide with the vibrant celebrations.
