The Delta State Police Command has announced the successful release of Joan Onyemaechi, a former member of the House of Representatives, who was kidnapped earlier this week. The incident occurred on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, while she was attending a church service off DBS Road in Asaba, Delta State. Tragically, her police orderly and driver were killed during the abduction.
In a statement on Saturday, SP Bright Edafe, the Police Public Relations Officer for Delta State, confirmed that Onyemaechi was freed on Friday night. “Yes, she was released last night,” he stated.
Sources indicate that a ransom exceeding N300 million was paid for her safe return. This incident highlights ongoing security challenges in the region, sparking discussions about the safety of public figures and the need for enhanced protective measures.
