Former U.S. Representative George Santos is expected to plead guilty to multiple charges in his federal fraud case, according to sources familiar with the situation.
The Republican from New York is anticipated to make his plea during a court hearing scheduled for Monday on Long Island.
Details of the plea remain confidential, as the source spoke on the condition of anonymity.
This court hearing was arranged after prosecutors and Santos’ legal team jointly requested it on Friday, and they successfully obtained a delay in certain pre-trial deadlines.
The announcement comes just weeks ahead of the jury selection originally set to commence on September 9. Santos had previously maintained a not guilty plea regarding a series of financial crimes, including allegations of misleading Congress about his wealth, collecting unemployment benefits while employed, and improperly utilizing campaign funds for personal expenses such as designer attire.
Santos was expelled from Congress in December following an ethics investigation that uncovered substantial evidence of legal violations and the exploitation of his public office for personal gain.
