Abiodun Obafemi Urges Support for New Super Eagles Coach Bruno Labbadia Ahead of AFCON Qualifiers
Abiodun Obafemi, the celebrated gold medallist from Atlanta ’96, has called on Nigerians and football supporters to rally behind the newly appointed head coach of the Super Eagles, Bruno Labbadia. As the team gears up for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers next month, Obafemi emphasizes the importance of unity and support for the coach.
The Nigeria Football Federation recently announced Labbadia, a seasoned 58-year-old tactician, as the new coach of the three-time African champions, following the departure of Finidi George in June. Labbadia faces the significant challenge of securing positive outcomes in the upcoming qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda, amidst skepticism regarding his qualifications from some corners of Nigerian football fans.
Obafemi has urged fans to come together in support of Labbadia as they prepare for their first qualifying match against the Republic of Benin on September 7.
"Nigerians are passionate about the progress of football in our country. For once, we should celebrate having a coach after a long wait," Obafemi stated. "We’ve been critical of the NFF for a lack of direction, but now that we have a coach, it’s essential to support him and see what unfolds. Performance will be the true measure of his success, but our prior support is crucial."
Obafemi acknowledged the importance of accountability, saying, "If the team underperforms, we will hold them accountable, as it’s vital they remain focused."
Reflecting on Labbadia’s credentials, Obafemi noted their previous encounters in the German Bundesliga, highlighting Labbadia’s disciplined nature and his reputation as an esteemed former player. While he acknowledged Labbadia’s unfamiliarity with African football, Obafemi believes that with a strong support team, positive results are attainable.
As Labbadia prepares to lead the Super Eagles into his inaugural match against Benin, Obafemi’s call for unity resounds, encouraging fans to stand behind the team as they embark on this critical journey in pursuit of AFCON success.
