A former special adviser on inter-governmental affairs to the ex-governor of Zamfara State, Sani Shinkafi, has publicly opposed calls for a state of emergency in Zamfara. He asserts that those advocating for such measures in a peaceful context are detractors of the public.
Shinkafi emphasized, “Those who seek a state of emergency amidst the prevailing peace and stability in Zamfara are enemies of the people. Their motives should be scrutinized by security agencies to uncover any underlying agendas.”
In a statement, Shinkafi, who also serves as Executive Director of the Patriots for the Advancement of Peace and Social Development, insisted that the removal of state leaders through such measures is both illegal and unconstitutional. He urged President Bola Tinubu to dismiss these calls as the result of discredited politicians.
Furthermore, he encouraged Governor Dauda Lawal to remain dedicated to delivering democratic benefits to the citizens of Zamfara. “It is astonishing that some politicians, dissatisfied with the improvements in security and peace, would mobilize youth to demand a state of emergency now that economic activities and infrastructure development are thriving after years of strife,” he remarked.
Shinkafi commended President Tinubu and military forces for their ongoing efforts against criminal activities in Zamfara and the broader Northwest region. He referenced the Constitution, highlighting that the security and welfare of citizens should be the primary focus of any government.
He reiterated that any attempt to suspend or remove a governor, deputy, or state legislators is not only unconstitutional but also undemocratic, citing Supreme Court rulings on the matter. Shinkafi pointed out that procedures for such actions are clearly outlined in the Constitution and proclaimed, “Zamfara does not meet the criteria for a state of emergency declaration.”
He further noted that if the government were to respond to emergencies everywhere, it would necessitate a state of emergency in all 36 states due to various forms of criminality across the nation.
Emphasizing the need for democratic principles, Shinkafi expressed confidence in Governor Dauda Lawal’s leadership, which he described as progressive and purposeful, working in tandem with President Tinubu and military officials to combat banditry effectively. He called for a focus on rebuilding Zamfara to boost economic activities and alleviate the suffering of its citizens.
Shinkafi concluded by calling for a spirit of patriotism among politicians in the state, urging them to prioritize constructive contributions over divisive politics, allowing Governor Lawal to fulfill his elected responsibilities without undue interference.
