Residents of Vazhudambedu Colony in Gummidipoondi taluk, Tiruvallur district, joyfully returned to the Arulmigu Pidari Ettiamman temple on September 16, 2024, following its reopening after a period of restriction. The temple had been sealed last month, preventing entry for villagers, predominantly from the Scheduled Castes (SC) community, due to tensions arising from a kumbhabhishekam ceremony conducted by a local group.
District Collector T. Prabhu Shankar facilitated the reopening and emphasized the importance of harmony among the local communities. He explained that the dispute originated when members of a dominant caste obstructed access to the temple pathway which is integral to the temple grounds. Through constructive dialogue, an agreement was reached, paving the way for peaceful coexistence.
The temple had been secured on the day of the ritual to avert potential disturbances, as villagers gathered after the yagasala pujas concluded. Legal actions were initiated against both factions, with an FIR addressing instances of discrimination filed against the dominant community.
In a proactive approach to community relations, the Collector announced upcoming developmental projects valued at ₹78 lakh. These projects will include the construction of a cement concrete road leading to the temple and other vital infrastructures for both residential areas.
This marks the third occasion the temple has been sealed due to community disputes. A local resident expressed hope that such restrictions would not occur again and that all groups would freely partake in worship.
K. Chitra Devi, Assistant Commissioner of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department, assured that measures are in place to prevent discrimination within the temple. Additionally, a police presence has been established to maintain peace and oversight of the situation will continue under local police jurisdiction.
