ECNETNews, Fort Lauderdale, FL, Mon. March 31, 2025: Florida’s Caribbean-American Congresswoman, Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, (D-20th District), honored Felicia J. Persaud with the 2025 Women in Leadership Achievement Award during the second EmpowHER Awards held on March 29th. This event celebrated Women’s History Month and highlighted the accomplishments of notable women in leadership roles.
The award ceremony took place at the Sonesta Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort and acknowledged the contributions of various honorees spanning leadership, STEM, sports, and human rights. Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick emphasized the community’s involvement in selecting the award recipients.
“Receiving the Women in Leadership Achievement Award at the EmpowHER Awards is a humbling reminder of the importance of using our voices to drive equity and inclusion,” Persaud stated. “I share this honor with every immigrant, including the undocumented, who are breaking barriers and making space for others to thrive, especially during these challenging times in the United States.”

Felicia’s pioneering efforts include founding CARIB ID, which successfully campaigned for a Caribbean ancestry identifier on U.S. Census forms, achieving this historic milestone in 2020 after extensive advocacy. Her commitment extends to seeking visibility, investment, and equitable representation for Caribbean and Black immigrant communities.
