Fiona Apple has unveiled a new cover of the song “Lately,” featured on the tribute album Tonight I’ll Go Down Swingin’, honoring the legacy of iconic drummer and singer-songwriter Don Heffington. The album, which also includes contributions from notable artists, is currently available through Nine Mile Records and Clover Music Group. Proceeds from the compilation will support the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund.
Heffington was a well-known figure at Largo, the Los Angeles venue that Fiona Apple commemorated with a bonus track on her 2012 release, The Idler Wheel…. He passed away in March 2021 at the age of 70 due to complications from leukemia. His original version of “Lately” served as the closing track on his final solo album, Contemporary Abstractions in Folk Song and Dance, released in 2016.
