The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a critical warning about increasing water levels in the River Niger as of August 22, 2024. This alert follows a report from the Niger Basin Authority in Niamey, indicating that upstream activities in Niger and Mali are contributing to the situation.
In a statement released on Friday, Director General Umar Mohammed noted that floodwaters from these upstream nations are expected to gradually flow into Nigeria through Kebbi State. He reassured the public that dam operators at Kainji and Jebba on the River Niger have been notified and are prepared to manage the developing circumstances.
“It is important to note that as of August 22, 2024, the dams are not currently releasing water from their reservoirs,” Mohammed emphasized.
NIHSA has urged all states and communities along the River Niger to remain vigilant, as floodwaters are anticipated to peak towards the end of August and into September. The agency assured the public that it will continuously monitor the flood situation across the country and provide regular updates.
