Extreme Heat at Colorado Airshow Sends Dozens to Emergency Rooms
In a concerning incident at the Pikes Peak Regional Airshow on Saturday, extreme heat prompted approximately 100 attendees to seek emergency treatment, with 10 individuals transported to local hospitals.
Emergency personnel on-site managed the majority of cases, significantly reducing the risk of serious injuries, as confirmed by local fire officials. Colorado Springs Fire Chief highlighted the effective response from organizers and emergency teams at the event, which took place at the Colorado Springs Municipal Airport, about 81 miles south of Denver.
The airshow, which was completely sold out for both days, featured thrilling performances by the renowned U.S. Navy Blue Angels and showcased a variety of modern and vintage aircraft. Attendees were reminded via event channels to stay hydrated, with a designated free water station located near the medical area.
As temperatures soared between 93 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit, the National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for El Paso and Pueblo counties, remaining effective through the weekend. Fire department officials urged participants at the airshow’s second day to bring water, hats, sunscreen, and umbrellas to cope with the heat.
Fire Chief Royal stressed the importance of hydration and safety as temperatures are expected to remain high. “We ask everyone to please stay hydrated, be prepared for hot temperatures, and stay safe,” he stated, ensuring a focus on attendee well-being.
