The Congress party intensified its criticism of the BJP on September 25, 2024, following remarks from BJP MP Kangana Ranaut advocating for the reinstatement of three controversial farm laws. Congress leaders have called for her expulsion from the ruling party if they do not support her views.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge condemned Ranaut’s statements, emphasizing that the upcoming elections in states like Haryana will reflect voter dissatisfaction with the BJP. He highlighted the significance of farmers in India’s economy and expressed outrage over the mention of reviving the revoked laws.
Ranaut later retracted her initial comments, stating they were her personal views and not reflective of the party’s official stance. She acknowledged her responsibilities as both an actress and a BJP member, indicating her statements should align with party policy.
The Congress party previously shared a video of Ranaut where she expressed her desire for the repealed laws to be reinstated, suggesting that farmers should advocate for their return to ensure their prosperity.
In response, Kharge pointed out the tragic loss of over 750 farmers’ lives during protests against those laws, underscoring the BJP’s disregard for their suffering. He criticized the current government for its alleged mistreatment of farmers, whom he referred to as a pivotal force in India’s growth.
Kharge also noted that the Modi administration had failed to fulfill promises aimed at increasing farmers’ incomes and proposed legal standards for minimum support prices. He reiterated that the government had not provided any relief to the families of the deceased farmers.
Congress spokesperson Shaktisinh Gohil addressed Ranaut’s comments, arguing that if the BJP disagrees with her, they should expel her from the party. He characterized her statements as disrespectful to the memory of the farmers who lost their lives, asserting that BJP’s silence on the issue indicates support for the controversial farm laws.
