What is For the Living About?
The documentary recounts the harrowing journey of 10-year-old Marcel, who, after two years in a death camp, was liberated by Russian forces in January 1945. He embarked on a treacherous 60-mile trek from Auschwitz-Birkenau to Krakow, Poland, through a war zone, in search of his family. This journey symbolizes a child’s desperate quest from Darkness to Light. Decades later, 250 cyclists from 12 countries retraced Marcel’s liberation route during the annual Ride for the Living—an event that honors his past while addressing the continuing fight against dehumanization.
While the Holocaust forms a central element, For the Living explores a broader, humanistic narrative about our shared humanity, drawing attention to the contrasts between our darkest moments and our capacity for compassion. The film includes insights from distinguished scholars who pose the urgent question: When will we prioritize re-humanizing the living over memorializing the dead?
Co-writers Bennett and Roper collaborated with Brett Kopin on this poignant project. Bennett also serves as co-producer alongside Lisa Effress, with Melinda Goldrich and Andrea Cayton as executive producers.
The world premiere of For the Living is set for Sunday, October 20, 2024, at 3 p.m. at the Newport Beach Film Festival, taking place at Big Newport 6 in Newport Beach, California. Following the screening, a Q&A session with the creators will provide further insights into this essential work.
