Electric vehicle owners are voicing their frustrations following the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) decision to discontinue the installation of additional meters in residential and small business settings. This recent policy reversal eliminates an option previously available since April 2020, which allowed EV owners to obtain a dedicated meter for more efficient vehicle charging.
This change responds to numerous EV owners who opted against upgrading their existing meters and sought a second meter purely for EV charging purposes.
Having a dedicated meter benefits users by enabling them to monitor their total energy consumption effectively. Additionally, it provides the opportunity for cost savings by charging their electric vehicles during off-peak hours when cheaper electricity rates apply.
Nevertheless, the PEA has reported widespread misuse of the system, with many customers using the second meters for non-EV related activities. The cancellation of this policy is intended to reinforce fair energy consumption practices.
Customers who previously requested or installed a second meter will retain access; however, the PEA has indicated it will take action against any detected misuse.
The announcement has sparked considerable backlash, as many individuals accuse the PEA of prioritizing profit over sustainable practices.
