The French foreign minister, Jean-Noel Barrot, issued a strong warning on Monday that the European Union is prepared to retaliate against any tariffs imposed by the United States, emphasizing the importance of defending European interests amid escalating trade tensions.
In a recent interview, Barrot reacted to US President Donald Trump’s announcement that his administration would impose a 25 percent tariff on steel and aluminum products, stating, “There is no hesitation when it comes to defending our interests.” He recalled similar actions taken in 2018, indicating that the EU would mirror any tariffs established by the US.
Barrot confirmed that retaliation is expected, asserting, “Of course. It’s not a surprise. We will replicate again this time.” He noted that decisions regarding specific retaliatory measures would ultimately be determined by the European Commission.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Barrot warned, “No one has an interest in entering into a trade war with the European Union.” The newly announced tariffs have added to concerns over a potential global trade conflict.
French President Emmanuel Macron echoed these sentiments, suggesting that the EU should not be the primary focus for the US. He emphasized that China represents a more pressing challenge for America and underscored the importance of the EU being ready to respond effectively to US actions.
As global trade dynamics continue to shift, the EU remains steadfast in its commitment to protect its economic interests.
