The European Union (EU) has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing democracy in Nigeria by backing initiatives aimed at empowering young Nigerians in politics and governance. As part of the Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria Programme, the EU is funding the Constituency Office Internship Programme, implemented by Yiaga Africa.
This three-month internship, which commenced in December 2024 and will conclude in February 2025, offers young individuals an invaluable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in legislative processes and constituency engagement. Participants will immerse themselves in the operations of constituency offices and build relationships with lawmakers, thus deepening their understanding of the democratic process.
The Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS emphasized the crucial role of youth in democracy, underscoring that engaged and responsible leadership is essential for a thriving democratic society. He stated that young people are vital to the electoral and governance frameworks that promote free, fair, and credible elections.
The internship program not only facilitates understanding of legislative operations but also allows interns to contribute to policy discussions, fostering a strong link between lawmakers and their constituents.
Yiaga Africa’s Programme Manager highlighted the positive impact of the internship on youth participation in governance, stating that it enables young people to shape policies that resonate with their needs. She expressed gratitude for EU support, which is instrumental in providing these transformative opportunities.
Interns shared their personal experiences, with one expressing how the program has significantly enhanced her confidence and inspired her to engage with her community. Another intern praised the relentless pursuit of inclusive governance and mentorship, crucial for driving meaningful change in society.
The program also aims to empower women and promote their involvement in politics—an area of focus for the EU as it continues to advocate for diverse representation in Nigeria’s political landscape.
